The 10-step Korean skincare routine

The 10-step Korean skincare routine is the best-known way of caring for your skin in K-beauty: light layers of product, from the thinnest to the richest texture, that cleanse, hydrate and protect the skin. Find out what each step of the Korean skincare routine does and when to use it.

1. Oil cleanser

The first step of double cleansing. A cleansing oil or balm melts away makeup, sunscreen and sebum without leaving the skin feeling tight. Massage onto a dry face, add a little water and rinse. When: evening. Facial cleansers

2. Water-based cleanser

A low-pH gel or foaming cleanser completes the double cleanse, removing sweat and impurities. When: evening, and in the morning for oily or combination skin. Facial cleansers

3. Exfoliator

Removes dead skin cells, helps unclog pores and helps the following steps absorb. Chemical exfoliation (AHA, BHA, PHA) or a gentle scrub, in moderation. When: evening, 1–2 times a week. Exfoliation & scrubs

4. Toner

Korean toners are not astringent: they rebalance the skin's pH after cleansing and add the first layer of hydration, even in 2–3 thin layers. When: morning and evening. Toners & essences

5. Essence

The "heart" of the Korean routine: a watery texture with active ingredients that hydrates deeply. Pat it in gently with your fingertips. When: morning and evening. Toners & essences

6. Serum or ampoule

A high concentration of ingredients such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid or PDRN for dark spots, glow, blemishes, fine lines or sensitivity. When: morning and evening (the strongest actives in the evening). Serums & ampoules

7. Sheet mask

Soaked in serum, it locks in hydration for 15–20 minutes: the quickest glow boost. When: evening (or in the morning before an event), 2–3 times a week. Face masks

8. Eye cream

The eye area is thinner and more delicate. An eye cream or eye patch hydrates and reduces the look of puffiness, dark circles and fine lines. Pat on with your ring finger. When: morning and evening. Eye care

9. Moisturiser

Seals in the previous steps and supports the skin barrier. A light gel cream for oily skin, a richer texture with ceramides or peptides for dry skin. When: morning and evening. Face creams

10. Sunscreen (morning) / Sleeping mask (evening)

In the morning, the most important step is an SPF 30–50 sunscreen, which helps protect against dark spots and photoageing, even on cloudy days. Korean sunscreens are lightweight, with no white cast. In the evening, you can apply a sleeping mask 2–3 times a week. Sunscreens · Face masks

You do not need all 10 steps every day

The K-beauty routine is a guide, not an obligation. Cleanser, toner, serum, moisturiser and, in the morning, sunscreen are enough for most skin types. Add exfoliation, masks and a sleeping mask a few times a week, depending on what your skin needs.

Frequently asked questions

In what order do I apply my products?

From the thinnest to the richest texture: cleanser, toner, essence, serum, eye cream, moisturiser and, in the morning, always sunscreen last.

Does it suit sensitive or oily skin?

Yes. For sensitive skin, choose soothing ingredients such as centella and exfoliate less; for oily skin, choose lightweight textures and BHA.

How soon will I see results?

Hydration and glow from the first few days. For dark spots, blemishes or fine lines, allow 4–8 weeks of consistent use.
