If you scroll skincare content, you've definitely come across it: PDRN in serums, creams, toners and even masks. In Korea it has become one of the hottest ingredients of the year. So let's see what it is, without the science stress.
What does PDRN mean?
PDRN is short for polydeoxyribonucleotide. A very long word for something fairly simple: small fragments of DNA used as a skincare ingredient.
In most cosmetics it traditionally comes from salmon, which is why you'll also hear it called "salmon DNA". In recent years there are also formulas with plant-based alternatives. If the source matters to you, check the ingredient list or the product description.
Why all the hype?
PDRN first became known through treatments in Korean aesthetic clinics. From there it moved into everyday skincare, in formats you can easily use at home: serums, creams and toners.
In cosmetics, PDRN is usually paired with hydrating and soothing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, collagen or centella. The goal is skin that feels hydrated and soft and looks plumper and more rested.
Important: a cosmetic is not a treatment. It won't replace an in-clinic procedure and it doesn't "repair" anything. It is, however, a lovely way to give your skin extra hydration and care.
Where you'll find it
Serum: the most popular way to try PDRN. A light serum spreads easily and fits almost any routine. See the Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum, with PDRN and peptides, or the Anua PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum if you want the focus on hydration.
Toner: if you love layering, a toner is the first hydration step after cleansing. The Medicube PDRN Pink Cica Soothing Toner pairs PDRN with centella for a gentle, soothing feel.
Cream: to lock in moisture at the end. The Medicube PDRN Pink Collagen Capsule Cream has the signature pink capsules that melt onto the skin.

How to add it to your routine
- Morning or night: most PDRN products fit both routines.
- Order: cleanse → toner → PDRN serum → cream → sunscreen (in the morning).
- Pairings: it works nicely with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides. If you already use strong actives (e.g. retinol or acids), add one new product at a time.
- One is enough: you don't need PDRN in every step. A serum or a cream is a great start.
Is it right for me?
PDRN formulas are usually gentle and hydrating, so they suit many skin types, from dry to combination. If you have a fish allergy or follow a vegan lifestyle, always check the source of the PDRN in the ingredients.
And of course, as with any new product, do a patch test first for 24–48 hours on a small area. If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition, ask your dermatologist.
Quick questions
How fast will I see a difference? The hydrated feel is usually immediate. For how your skin looks overall, give your routine at least 4–6 weeks of consistent use.
Can I use it with vitamin C? Usually yes. If you want to be sure, use vitamin C in the morning and PDRN at night.
Is it only for mature skin? Not at all. Because it's mainly hydrating, it suits anyone who wants a more rested, glowy look, at any age.
Do I need more PDRN products? Not necessarily. A good base of gentle cleansing, hydration and sunscreen matters more than the number of products.
The bottom line
PDRN is an interesting, gentle ingredient that makes a hydration routine feel more "premium". It isn't a magic wand, but if you love trying the latest Korean skincare trends, it deserves a spot on your shelf. And don't forget: the best anti-ageing step is still daily sunscreen. ☀️
